Georgetown is a small town in Far North Queensland, which has a history as a gold mining town. In the 1970s there was a mini gold rush there, which was short lived.
Ron and Anne Edwards traveled there in 1992, and documented their trip, which led to the little book, similar to the other Explorer's Guides we have for sale.
There are some interesting points of interest discussed - The Millstream Express, the Etheridge River, hand made nails and even a recipe for marmalade!
This book is a project of Ron and Anne Edwards and the Lockhart River Art Gang. We have known them for two years.
Last year and the year before they helped us with leatherwork and sketching. The project is about sketching around Lockhart, telling you about Lockhart and also about our art work.
Ron and Anne came and spent many days with us on this project. We hope you enjoy reading our book because it will help you to know Lockhart better. Rosella-Namok
This book is the result of a collaboration between Kubin State School, Ron and Anne Edwards and the Rams Skull Press in July 1997.
The artist-in-residency project was made possible through the funding support of PCAP (Priority Country Area Program). Bill Richards, State School Principal at Kubin, played a vital role in nurturing this project.
Thanks also to the teachers Louise Manus and Louisa Sagiba and the teacher's aids Loretta Bosun and Sara Neliman. Thanks also to Ann Richards for her healing hands.
Being a stranger to the Island I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the names in this booklet, but asked Bill Richards to check it for me before we went to press.
Most visitors to Jowalbinna leave from Cairns.
A few go by light aircraft, for there is a landing strip not far from the camp, but most go by four-wheel drive, either in their own vehicles or in one of those belonging to local Bush Guides.
The Laura sandstone area contains the most extensive and comprehensive collection of Aboriginal rock art in Queensland, and some of the most important art in Australia by any definition. The Laura sandstones are a striking geological feature, kilometer after kilometer of flat-topped escarpments, their golden rock faces pitted with hundreds of shallow caves which provided excellent shelter for the early inhabitants of this vast country.
